ATIS Releases 5G Security Report

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) released a new technical report, “5G Security Requirements (ATIS 1000077),” which contains recommendations to advance incorporation of the concept of security by design into the fabric of the upcoming 5G network. The standard is a product of ATIS' work with the FCC's Technological Advisory Council (TAC) 5G Cybersecurity Working Group.

This TAC working group established the 5G subcommittee to study what tools and security controls should be built into 5G design specifications to make 5G networks and devices sufficiently secure from the onset. The subcommittee developed a document proposing security recommendations, which was subsequently sent to ATIS for technical evaluation. This new ATIS technical report is the result of the technical analysis and further input to the initial 5G subcommittee document and recommendations. It will be used to provide input to the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to advance its work on 5G standards.

"This new ATIS analysis validates, refines and enhances the TAC's initial recommendation to develop 5G service and architecture security requirements with broad support among service providers and suppliers," said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. "It is one of the many deliverables ATIS is contributing to shape the future of the 5G network and advance North American requirements at the global level."

With publication of the report, ATIS and the 5G subcommittee are continuing their collaboration to identify specific security requirements to submit as change requests to 3GPP.
