FCC Chairman Notes Importance of NG 9-1-1 Funding (7/28/10)
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said next-generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) legislation introduced in the House and Senate is consistent with the recommendations of the national broadband plan. The comments were part of responses to questions from various lawmakers about the FCC’s broadband plan.

The NG 9-1-1 comments were in response to questions from Rep. Anna Eshoo, co-chair of the E9-1-1 Caucus, asking whether Genachowski sees a need for H.R. 4829, NG 9-1-1 Presentation Act of 2010. “The legislation is consistent with our recommendations in the national broadband plan (NBP) and would advance the vision for the rapid and efficient deployment of and migration to NG 9-1-1,” the chairman said.

The legislation reauthorizes the 9-1-1 grant program that was created in 2004 by the ENHANCE 911 Act and reauthorizes the 911 Implementation Coordination Office (ICO). “There is a significant need for those provisions that would authorize grants for E9-1-1 and NG 9-1-1 implementation, condition receipt of grants on use of 9-1-1 funds only for their intended purposes, and address 9-1-1 caller location issues with respect to operators of multiline telephone systems (MLTS),” Genachowski said. “I also appreciate that the legislation includes training in 9-1-1 services, because I recognize that training is of national importance.”
