FCC Holds Firm on E9-1-1 Handset Deadline (1/8)

The FCC denied a petition from CTIA and the Rural Cellular Association requesting suspension of the Dec. 31 deadline for meeting enhanced 9-1-1 handset-based location requirements. Sprint Nextel and other carriers not in compliance were sent to the agency's enforcement bureau for further action. The FCC agreed with APCO and NENA and said suspending the end-2006 deadline for carriers that chose handset-based location technology to achieve 95-percent E9-1-1 handset penetration and creating a new compliance strategy "would render meaningless the handset penetration requirement." The FCC on a case-by-case basis has been granting some extensions of E-911 waiver requests to some regional carriers.
