USMSS Proposes Name Change (10/9/14)

The U.S. Motorola Service Station (USMSS) proposed changing the name of the organization to the Technology Resource Network International (TRNI). Bill Dow, executive director of USMSS, made the announcement during opening remarks at the Wireless Leadership Summit. The annual event is co-hosted by the Enterprise Wireless Alliance (EWA) and USMSS.

Dow said the new name was chosen to highlight the following parts of the organization:

• Technology refers to a broader description of what members do;

• Resource refers to the place where hardware, software, consulting, deployment and project management and certified service can be found;

• Network is the culmination of commercial and servicing members who believe in certification and service excellence; and

• International refers to the invitation to Canadian companies to join.

“We felt that the name should be inclusive rather than exclusive and that it should focus on the technical nature of our service offering,” said Dave Robison, USMSS chairman of the board of directors. “More recently, after the board agreed to accept Canadian members, should they wish to join; it was imperative that those prospective members also be included in a new name consideration.”

Full membership will vote on the name in the next two weeks.

USMSS was formed as a national trade association in 1998. The association was formed from four regional associations of Motorola Service Partners as a separate national entity. USMSS reintroduced the concept of certification in the Wireless Industry in conjunction with the Electronics Technician Association (ETA) in 2005. In 2011, the organization shifted its criteria for membership from only Motorola service partners to include Certified Service Centers (CSC). The CSCs receive accreditation from the CSC Consortium.
