Affected counties included Albany, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Washington, Warren and Saratoga. Service was restored by Thursday afternoon. Customers who were impacted by the outage received a recorded message when they tried to dial 9-1-1.
A Verizon Wireless spokesman told timesunion.com that it appears squirrels or some other type of animal chewed through an above-ground fiber cable, causing the outage.
