Connex, a Swedish transport organization, chose Sepura TETRA radios for use on its buses in the city of Umeå in mid-north Sweden. Sepura terminals are part of a TETRA solution that will replace Connex' analog communication system, with a complete rollout expected by June. Sepura's handheld and vehicle radios will operate on Damm's TETRA infrastructure. The vehicle radios, all with GPS, will be installed in the buses, while the handheld terminals will be used by Connex' service personnel. Sepura's vehicle terminals will enable the transmission of GPS data from buses to an AVL system, providing real-time information on bus locations and activity, as well as statistics for route analysis and route optimization. The radios will allow direct voice communications between the control room and bus drivers. The ability to know where any bus is at any given time, through GPS positioning, provides additional safeguards for bus drivers and bus passengers in emergency situations.
