Motorola Buys Trident Micro Systems (12/16/14)

Motorola Solutions acquired Trident Micro Systems, manufacturer of the PassPort trunked radio system. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PassPort is a logic trunked radio (LTR) system that consists of multiple radio repeater sites linked together to form a wide-area radio dispatch network. “Trident’s core trunking technology already plays an important role in Motorola Solutions’ Connect Plus portfolio,” said Tama McWhinney, a Motorola Solutions spokeswoman.

Connect Plus is Motorola’s MOTOTRBO digital wide-area infrastructure system. A fact sheet on the Motorola Solutions website offers a brochure on LTR/PassPort analog trunking availability in a MOTOTRBO expansion card from Scholer-Johnson.

McWhinney said about 40 Trident employees will join Motorola Solutions but will remain at Trident’s Arden, North Carolina, office.

“Trident’s skilled engineering teams bring leading-edge voice and data expertise to the Motorola Solutions portfolio,” she said. “We expect to continue to expand our core trunking solution capabilities to meet the needs of our customers and markets. We’re looking forward to continuing innovation in the Connect Plus space with the Trident team.”

Trident, which also offers a portable interoperability solution, is Motorola’s second partner acquisition this year. Motorola purchased Twisted Pair Solutions in January.
