Pai to Deliver Progress Report on 9-1-1 Service in Hotels, Large Buildings (1/12/15)

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai will hold an event in Marshall, Texas, Jan. 23 to deliver a progress report on his effort to ensure that Americans who dial 9-1-1 can reach someone who can help. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the headquarters of the Marshall Police Department.

Last January, Pai said in a statement he would address the issue of connecting 9-1-1 calls to emergency personnel, regardless of where or how the call originates. He provided an example of a mother who died in December in a hotel although her 9-year-old daughter called 9-1-1 four times from the hotel room but didn’t realize she needed to dial a 9 first to get an outside line.

Pai’s investigation revealed that the phone system in that Texas hotel wasn’t unique. In fact, in most lodging properties across the United States, a guest would not have been able to reach emergency services by dialing 9-1-1. Moreover, this problem was not limited to hotels but was also common in other large buildings, such as offices and schools.

Pai has been working in consultation with the lodging industry, the leading vendors of multiline telephone service (MLTS) products and services, and members of the public during the course of the past year to fix the problem.

“I look forward to sharing the progress that we have made over the past year toward ensuring that our 9-1-1 system matches those in need with those who can help — in particular, by enabling Americans to reach emergency personnel whenever they dial 9-1-1,” Pai said. “And it was obvious to me that the most appropriate place to report on this issue was Marshall, Texas.”
