A recent survey of LMR users conducted by Market in View indicated that 75 percent of users make use of a commercial cellular service to supplement LMR communications at work. Kodiak Networks, a provider of broadband push-to-talk (PTT) solutions, commissioned the survey.

The survey data also indicated that 84 percent of decision makers and 38 percent of end users are using cell phones to access productivity applications, in addition to voice and data communications. The survey represents more than 10 industry verticals, including public safety, and has a sample base of 600 decision makers with LMR experience and 600 nonmanagerial LMR end users in the United States.

Survey results indicate that business and public-safety decision makers would increase the number of PTT users on their LMR networks by 47 percent when they augment their LMR networks with broadband PTT. The survey also found that 61 percent of decision makers want to purchase broadband PTT from mobile network operators.

According to the survey, the top-three most desirable attributes of broadband PTT are coverage (85 percent), support for 4G/3G cellular networks and Wi-Fi (84 percent), and compatibility with the latest smartphones (81 percent). In addition, LMR business decision makers find private one-to-one calling to be an important attribute, as 78 percent responded that it was “extremely compelling” or “very compelling” and 77 percent indicated that information on a user’s availability before calling is a key attribute.

The survey also found that 76 percent of decision makers found the availability of low-cost, ruggedized feature phones a very or extremely compelling motivation to adopt PTT services provided by carrier-integrated broadband PTT.

“The survey results clearly show LMR users are already using cell phones to augment LMR networks and that there is strong market interest in the use of broadband PTT services from wireless operators,” said Bruce Lawler, chief product officer of Kodiak. “Kodiak Broadband PTT enables seamless communications between users on cellular networks and those on LMR networks, significantly expanding the reach of the LMR network.”

“The LMR user survey we conducted validates the competitive strengths of a broadband PTT solution,” said William Gast, partner of Market in View. “Organizations that have been using LMR can benefit from integrated PTT services provided by cellular carriers.”
