FirstNet Releases Annual Report to Congress

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) released its annual report to Congress. This month marks the fifth anniversary of the legislation that created FirstNet.

“Over the last fiscal year, FirstNet accomplished many major milestones, with the most significant being the gains made in the acquisition process for the deployment of the nationwide public-safety broadband network,” said Edward Parkinson, FirstNet director of government affairs, in a blog post about the report.

However, that acquisition process is now tied up in the courts with a pre-award protest filed by Rivada Mercury.

The report highlighted FirstNet’s transition into “an operational, customer service-oriented entity” during fiscal year 2016. “This included an expanded consultation and outreach program,” Parkinson said. “Our leadership and staff participated in more than 130 association events with the 43-member Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC), more than 140 consultation events with the state single points of contact (SPOCs) and more than 83 tribal meetings.

The report also highlighted FirstNet’s Innovation and Test Lab in Boulder, Colorado.

“FirstNet stands on the cusp of completing the acquisition process and moving forward with the deployment of public safety’s network,” Parkinson said. “We look forward to continuing to work hand in hand with the public-safety community and the states to deliver for the men and women who protect and serve our nation.”

The full report is here.
