Motorola Offers Details on Apps, Services for FirstNet through AT&T

Motorola Solutions announced it will provide mobile apps, software and services for the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) network as part of its role on the AT&T team selected by the U.S. government to deliver the U.S. nationwide public-safety broadband network.

“Public safety is looking for advanced, interoperable communications and collaboration capabilities,” said Chris Sambar, senior vice president-FirstNet, AT&T Global Public Sector. “Working with Motorola Solutions and other key team members, we will help deliver broadband-enabled devices and apps that will be certified for use by public safety seeking FirstNet services.”

Motorola Solutions’ LEX F10 device has been certified for the AT&T Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. The company will also deliver a suite of mobile apps, such as mapping and messaging, built for the unique needs of public safety. The suite will work virtually seamlessly between the FirstNet network and LMR networks, as well as other software and services that support and enable the new FirstNet communications capabilities, a statement said.

Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown said May 31 at Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference that North America drives two-thirds of its revenue. He said there are four opportunities for Motorola to monetize in public-safety LTE: applications, services, interoperability between LMR and LTE, and next-generation devices.

“Applications will determine who will switch to FirstNet,” Brown said at the conference. “Our goal is to have a software development toolkit that software developers can write into. We’re not an applications firm, and we’re not going to be one. We will have an open architecture with APIs (application programming interfaces).”

Brown said the company’s research tells them that public-safety officials want “eyes up, hands free” technology. “We believe we can help AT&T increase the number of subscribers,” he said.
