Tom Sorley, chair of the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), passed away Feb. 3. Sorley was also the deputy chief information officer (CIO)/deputy director, IT public safety at the city of Houston.

Sorley was a member of SAFECOM and former chair of the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) Technology and Broadband Committee.

He was a recipient of the Richard DeMello Award, presented each year to an individual in public-safety communications who has demonstrated the highest levels of personal and professional conduct and performance in the local, state and national public-safety communications arena.

Sorley was a long-time participant of NPSTC. “We benefited from knowing him, being challenged by his intellect and enjoying his humor,” said an email from NPSTC. “We are all profoundly impacted by this loss. His contributions to public safety will be felt for decades.”

Last year after Hurricane Harvey, Sorley provided an update on the city’s Project 25 (P25) network while noting he was thankful for his employees’ safety.
