Cybersecurity Tops iCERT’s 2018 Policy Platform

The Industry Council for Emergency Response Technologies (iCERT) adopted its policy platform for 2018, as approved by its board of directors during a recent strategy session. The list of topics represents the association’s focus for legislation, technology development and regulatory matters throughout the year.

“As we approach the 50th anniversary of the first 9-1-1 call in America, and as broadband communications and data services for public-safety agencies worldwide begin to take shape, our positions on these critical issues will help the commercial sector support its public sector partners as we continue to address our mutual goal of enhanced safety and security for all citizens, residents and visitors,” said iCERT Executive Director George Rice.

iCERT’s policy platform defines objectives for issues critical to the public-safety sector and the desired outcomes for achieving those objectives. This year’s issues include:
• Cybersecurity
• Enterprise communications systems (ECS) access to 9-1-1
• Emergency Services IP Network (ESInet) integration
• Next-generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) acceleration and adoption
• NG 9-1-1/public-safety broadband convergence and data interoperability
• Smart and safe communities
• Targeted states campaign, resourcing of 9-1-1

“Our focus for this year also promotes effective emergency calling and communications,” said iCERT Vice Chair and Policy Committee Chair Don Brittingham, vice president for public-safety policy at Verizon. “It provides us with a means to use private sector innovation to stimulate continuous improvements, all in support of the broader goal of efficient and effective governance for emergency communications systems and services, while recognizing the shared responsibilities of federal, state and local government agencies.”
