During April, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National 911 Program recognize 9-1-1 education month, and April 8 –14 as National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week. Throughout 2018, the 9-1-1 community is celebrating 50 years of 9-1-1.

National 9-1-1 education month provides a an opportunity to educate the public about all aspects of 9-1-1, including its history and continuous adaptation to changing technologies; tips for using 9-1-1 appropriately; information about next-generation 9-1-1, the future of emergency calling; and the professionalism and dedication of the thousands of telecommunicators in 9-1-1 dispatch centers nationwide.

“The men and women who answer calls for assistance everyday all across the United States are the backbone of the 9-1-1 system," said National 911 Program Coordinator Laurie Flaherty. “Their professionalism, commitment and dedication are what we honor during National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.”

A number of resources are available to help provide information about 9-1-1 to communities nationwide. For more information about the National 911 Program, including the upcoming 9-1-1 grant program application process, visit
