The second chapter of the “Next Generation 911 Interstate Playbook,” an effort to share firsthand experiences and best practices from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota as they transition to next-generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) and interconnect 9-1-1 systems, is now available.

The second chapter addresses helpful information for states and regions, including:
• What NG 9-1-1 is and is not;
• NG 9-1-1 standards to consult when planning a transition;
• Call transfer requirements between states using different providers;
• Geographic information systems (GIS) integration in the NG 9-1-1 ecosystem;
• Interim short message service (SMS) text-to-911 test scenarios and lessons learned.

As more states progress through the implementation of NG 9-1-1, the resource offers a lessons learned and a collection of templates and samples of useful documents.

"This resource by the 9-1-1 community for the 9-1-1 community will continue to help pave the way for NG 9-1-1 interconnectivity between states," said National 911 Program Coordinator Laurie Flaherty. "Chapter 2 explores several implementation stages that state and local 9-1-1 authorities will face. The commitment of these four states to share their experiences in working together will advance emergency communications nationwide."

The resource is available here.
