ATIS Releases Report on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Communications

Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) released a new report that addresses how sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can be leveraged to address some information communications technology (ICT) challenges.

"Our work in this area builds on existing industry developments while integrating and extending these efforts to create an advanced and comprehensive perspective of telecom-centric AI," said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. "It was conducted with an eye toward how industry collaboration can advance AI and ML solutions as well as companies' business objectives."

While AI and ML have been active areas of research for decades, advances in technology have created new opportunities. Among other benefits, advances in these areas make it possible to use data gathered from the network to help systems automatically react to changing traffic patterns, faults, and other capacity and performance-impacting events in real time. This means higher network performance with less effort on the part of the service provider.

The new report documents a variety of network-related AI use cases including network anomaly detection, network security, radio access network (RAN) optimization, dynamic traffic and capacity management, AI and orchestrated management, AI-based subscriber insights, AI-assisted customer support and sales as well as AI-based content processing and management. It also addresses AI architectures and technologies as well as network requirements in support of AI.
