Airbus Reverses Decision to Divest Mobile Radio Business

Airbus Defence and Space reversed a four-year-old decision to divest its professional mobile radio (PMR) business — called Secure Land Communications — and re-integrate the business into Airbus Defence and Space.

In 2014, the European-based company defined space (launchers and satellites), military aircraft, missiles and related systems and services as its future core businesses.

However, with the onslaught of digital technology, Secure Land Communications will be part of an updated company strategy that positions digital services at the center of growth for the division, said Oliver Koczan, head of Secure Land Communications at Airbus.

“Within the divisions, there are many synergies between our platforms and applications and cybersecurity solutions, as well as between our technology and border security, and of course, our applications and city communications,” Koczan said. “This all creates a very good and positive momentum for the future.”

Koczan said the focus will be on hybrid solutions that capitalize on Airbus’ PMR offerings and installations and complementing them with Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)-based technology with more data-centric capabilities. He said users "plan to keep what they are using today for a good while."

“Whatever is going to be standardized at 3GPP with the PPDR (public protection and disaster response) segment, we will make use of it,” he said. “When it comes to collaboration between applications and mission-based capabilities, the 3GPP will be the foundation of what we will create on top of.”

In March, Motorola Solutions completed the acquisition of the Airbus DS Communications business from Airbus Defence and Space. Airbus DS Communications is a provider in North America of command center software for emergency call-handling.
