ATIS White Paper Outlines UAV Features in 3GPP Standards
Friday, October 26, 2018 | Comments

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) released a resource outlining current and planned work in global standards organization Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to enable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) support.

A wide range of 3GPP standards are advancing technical improvements to further enhance the cellular services provided to UAVs and are outlined in the white paper titled “Support for UAV Communications in 3GPP Cellular Standards.”

Cellular networks are developed to comply with global technical standards that ensure that equipment from different vendors is interoperable. All major commercial cellular networks adhere to the standards developed by the global partnership 3GPP. By adding features to support UAV communications requirements to the 3GPP standard, the cellular industry is acting to ensure networks have a technical platform that can meet UAVs' present and future needs, ATIS said.

"With so many innovative new applications for UAV technology, this new ATIS report provides a concise and future-focused view of UAV-related 3GPP standards,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “The goal is to help a wide range of vendors and service providers leverage these to advance their own innovations, as well as their technical contributions to 3GPP."

The white paper is here.
