NIST Updates List of FirstNet-Certified Devices

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) updated the list of approved devices for the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) network, adding the first fleet management device to the list.

Several new devices, including the Geotab GO8 LTE telematics device, were certified Nov. 2. The GO8 device is designed for fleet management applications using Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks.

Other newly certified devices include the Apple iPhone XR, three LG smartphone models, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A, two Apple iPad Pro models and the Netgear AirCard 797S.

“Devices that have a FirstNet Ready badge are those that will work on the FirstNet EPC (evolved packet core) simply by installing a FirstNet SIM (subscriber identity module) card,” the firstnet.com website said. “Note that some FirstNet Ready devices may also require a simple software update. The remaining devices displayed are those that will work on the FirstNet EPC upon updating the software, unlocking the device (if required) and installing a FirstNet SIM.”

NIST is responsible for maintaining the device list under the legislation that established FirstNet. The Geotab device and several other newly certified devices on the NIST list were not on AT&T’s firstnet.com website’s list of devices and accessories at press time.

AT&T and FirstNet spokespeople did not respond to requests for information on those devices by press time.

The first list of FirstNet devices was released in April. Find NIST's process for creating and maintaining the list here
