Leonardo Offers Security, Command and Control in Italian 5G Trial

Leonardo announced it is part of a 5G technology experimentation project in Italy, particularly in the cities of Bari and Matera.

Leonardo launched use cases in the following areas: smart port, public security and access control in the Bari port area. This is one of the first concrete applications of the new technology capabilities executed on a crucial element of everyday life, namely security.

Thanks to the interconnection of port infrastructures and different devices including sensors, cameras, wearable terminals, drones and transportable gates, under a central command-and-control platform for security and access control, the security of the port area will be enhanced, increasing touristic and commercial attractiveness.

The Bari-Matera 5G Consortium deployed the system with Leonardo offering the security components and the command-and-control platform and Bosch providing video cameras and with the support of the Southern Adriatic Sea Port Authority and the security agencies of the port.

TIM, Fastweb and Huawei jointly won the tender for BariMatera5G, launched by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to trial 5G technology in the two cities. Thanks to an investment of more than 60 million euros (US$68.1 million) in four years, Bari and Matera will be among the first 5G cities in Europe where 5G services will be tested in sectors such as health, industry 4.0, tourism, culture, automotive and public safety.

The project involves 52 partners, including seven university and research centers, 34 companies and 11 public administrations. The 5G network that will be deployed in Bari and Matera will allow a transmission capacity 10 times higher than the one enabled by 4G and the on-field experimentation of more than 70 use cases, determining a radical transformation of the territories involved.
