Iowa Overrules County that Blocked FirstNet Tower Construction
Monday, March 18, 2019 | Comments

Iowa state legislators overruled a local county board decision that would have stopped construction of an AT&T cell tower to be part of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) network in the state.

An Allamakee County Board of Adjustment decision stopping construction of an AT&T cell tower was overruled in a bill approved 38-10 by the Iowa Senate. The bill now goes to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds for her signature, according to press reports.

Allamakee County denied construction of the site near New Albin, where Iowa and Minnesota meet along the Mississippi River, citing its obstruction of bluff views of the river, press reports said. Local governments opposed the tower as well, saying it was an attack on the autonomy of local jurisdictions.

The bill was written to apply only to Allamakee County and would sunset after the tower is constructed.
