AT&T Signs Docomo Pacific to Deploy FirstNet Services in 2 U.S. Territories

AT&T selected Docomo Pacific to help support the deployment of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) in Guam and the commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Docomo Pacific is owned by NTT Docomo, a Japanese-owned telecommunications carrier.

FirstNet delivers a single, nationwide network platform that’s purpose-built to enhance communications across the public-safety community.

“We’re pleased to support the FirstNet mission,” said Roderick Boss, Docomo Pacific president and CEO. “This will help transform the way Guam’s and CNMI’s public-safety and emergency officials share information quickly when they need to most. So, when lives are on the line, we can rest assured knowing our public-safety officials are equipped and have the necessary tools to communicate with our island community.”

Docomo Pacific is an authorized member of AT&T’s FirstNet Dealer Program, which means it can sell FirstNet services to eligible public-safety customers.

Docomo Pacific is also lobbying against a bill introduced in Congress that would limit foreign carriers from providing telecommunications services to U.S. first responders and military personnel, according to an article in the Saipan Tribune, an online newspaper in CNMI.

Boss said the U.S. House of Representatives is getting ready to submit a version of the National Defense Authorization Act that includes a provision that would allow only U.S.-owned carriers to provide Department of Defense and first responders services such as FirstNet. Boss says that provision would affect both Guam and the CNMI, where Docomo would soon be deploying the FirstNet platform.
