JVCKENWOOD and EF Johnson Technologies, its U.S. communications systems subsidiary, were awarded a contract by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in the U.S. to deliver professional digital radio systems.

The contract is for the supply of professional digital radio systems for installation in about 3,300 vehicles owned by the CHP. The 3 billion yen (US$27.3 million) three-year contract also includes support services.

California is the third-largest state in the U.S., and the CHP patrols 107,000 miles of highways.

The digital radio systems use low-band radio frequencies at 50 MHz, which are good for long-distance communications. Different counties in California operate digital radio systems that use different frequencies and protocols. The contract aims to develop and supply solutions capable of operating four digital radio systems to be installed in each vehicle using one controller unit.

“In the public-safety market in North America, which is expected to continue expanding, we will conduct a total solution business for professional radio systems, with a focus on professional radio systems conforming to the Project 25 (P25) digital radio format by leveraging EF Johnson’s strength in this field, and by utilizing our professional wireless technologies that can support all protocols and sales channels covering extensive areas,” a statement said.

“We expect expansion of the total system solution business for digital radio systems capable of transmitting not only sound but also data, including videos and images. JVCKENWOOD will place top priority on enhancing the efforts of broadband solutions as a new business field through proactive collaboration with partners toward achieving medium- to long-term growth in the communications systems business.
