Airbus Completes TETRA Upgrade for Munich Utility

Airbus completed the modernization of Munich’s municipal utility operator Stadtwerke München’s (SWM) radio network with TETRA technology. In December, the Bavarian regional capital’s energy supplier deployed the Airbus’ TETRA server.

Taira is a server based on IP technology that can be integrated into existing IT environments, ensuring ease of operation and reduced operating costs. A priority for SWM was to equip the system with georedundant and high-availability switching technology. In addition to introducing the new server technology, the existing private mobile radio network was migrated and converted to IP during operation.

SWM can extend the system in coming years if required to additional consumers. During the implementation phase, the TETRA system was configured with the necessary user licenses for a potential system extension.

SWM is the largest public company in Europe and supplies Munich and the region with electricity, remote heating and cooling systems, drinking water and telecommunications, as well as operating swimming pools and ensuring mobility. The company’s more than 9,000 employees can optimize their operations with the TETRA radio network. Since 2012, SWM and Airbus have provided encrypted communications for the annual Munich Security Conference to better coordinate the global event. Would you like to comment on this story?
