Basil “Bill” Pagones of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away May 15 after a long illness. He was 81 years old. Pagones was the former Project 25 (P25) Technology Interest Group (PTIG) executive director and a friend and colleague to many involved with Project 25.

Pagones was a longtime developer and supporter for the P25 standard, used to create interoperable, mutual aid and emergency communications for public safety nationwide. During his long career at Motorola Solutions, he was responsible for P25 standards agreements and their application with both government agency users and other P25 manufacturers that developed P25 interoperable communications equipment and services.

As an early supporter of the standards and the benefits to both the user and manufacturing community, Pagones was instrumental in the promotion of communications interoperability among the public-safety user community and different communications manufacturers. In addition, he supported numerous federal government customers in their development and use of Motorola P25 communications systems.

After retiring from Motorola, he served as executive director of PTIG, where he led the industry association and their members in the promotion and application of the P25 technology. His work included development of a P25 website, community of interest, white papers and other sources of information about the successful sharing and use of the technology. He also led the PTIG in the development of numerous technical papers and panel presentations at industry conferences and trade shows. He was responsible for the ground-breaking introduction and multivendor interoperability demonstration of the P25 Inter RF Subsystem Interface (ISSI) that offers users the ability to link multiple P25 systems together at the network level.

Pagones’ full obituary can be viewed here.
