The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) board approved a $213 million budget for fiscal year 2021, with a focus on the organization’s operations and its investment into the FirstNet network.

“This budget provides steady funding for the FirstNet Authority and continues our momentum for investing back into the FirstNet network,” said FirstNet Authority Board Chair Edward Horowitz. “We will continue to engage with public safety to ensure the network delivers the attributes outlined in the strategic plan and the FirstNet Authority Roadmap and evolves along with technology and operational needs.”

The board approved Resolution 106, which allocated $83.5 million for the authority’s operations in fiscal year 2021, along with a reserve of $83.5 million in reserves for operations. The budget also includes $46 million for FirstNet network enhancements.

At its June board meeting, the FirstNet Authority board approved the first set of network investments — a total of $218 million for new deployables for its fleet and to transition the network’s core to 5G. That $218 million was part of the 2020 budget.

The specific projects for the $46 million in fiscal year 2021 are still to be determined but will be informed by FirstNet’s road map and will be guided by the authority’s investment strategy and principles. Any projects will require board review and approval.
