Trump Nominates Simington to be FCC Commissioner
Wednesday, September 16, 2020 | Comments

President Donald Trump nominated Nathan Simington to take the seat of Michael O’Rielly on the FCC Board.

Trump originally nominated O’Rielly to another term on the FCC but later withdrew the nomination. Media reports indicate that the nomination may have been withdrawn because O’Rielly did not support the president’s attempts to regulate social media.

Simington is currently the senior advisor in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) specializing in network and telecommunications policy. Among his main responsibilities across the telecommunications industry, he works on 5G security and secure supply chains and the American Broadband Initiative. He also serves as NTIA’s representative to the Government Advisory Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Prior to his appointment at NTIA, Simington was senior counsel to Brightstar Corporation. In that role, he negotiated deals with companies across the spectrum of the telecommunications and internet industry, including most of the world’s leading wireless carriers. Prior to his career with Brightstar, Simington was an attorney in private practice with prominent national and international law firms.

Simington was a Presser Fellow in Bucharest in 2005. He earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, two masters degrees from the University of Rochester and a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University.
