Resources for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
Tuesday, April 13, 2021 | Comments

Several public-safety organizations shared efforts to honor telecommunicators and resources for telecommunicators in honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW), which runs from April 11 to April 17 this year.

The 911 Telecommunicator Tree of Life is a collaboration between the NG911 Institute, the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), the National Association of State 9-1-1 Administrators (NASNA), the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), and the National 911 Office to honor telecommunicators. Stories recognizing outstanding telecommunicators can be shared with the site. Find the 911 Telecommunicator Tree of Life site here.

APCO’s NPSTW website offers a variety of resources for telecommunicators, ways to honor telecommunicators and information on the week. Find that website here.

The National 911 Office also released a resource to help telecommunicators better understand next-generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1). Find that resource here.

Finally, the National 911 Office shared resources for how professionals can push elected officials and others to reclassify telecommunicators as a protective service occupation. Since 2017, the public-safety community has worked to have the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from administrative support to protective service. The OMB declined to do so in 2017.

On April 1, several U.S. representatives reintroduced a bill into the house that would require the OMB to reclassify telecommunicators. Find the National 911 Office’s resource page here.
