ETSI Announces Interoperability Event for Future Railway Comms Solution
Friday, April 23, 2021 | Comments

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) announced that its Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) Plugtests event will take place from 14 to 18 June. More than 20 vendors and more than 80 participants will take part in the event.

GSM-R is the current standard for the railway telecommunication services developed and maintained by ETSI Technical Committee (TC) Rail Telecommunications (RT). With the increased need for more throughput, higher capacity and flexible deployment options, FRMCS is being developed based on Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) mission-critical services (MCX) standards.

The remote event will validate equipment interoperability using test scenarios based on the 3GPP mission critical work with a focus on testing railways-oriented capabilities such as functional aliases, multitalker and mission-critical data (MCData) IP connectivity.

Using over-the-top (OTT) tests via virtual private network (VPN) connections from the vendor labs, the tests will be based on 3GPP, ETSI and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards. The tests were designed for MCX application servers including mission-critical push to talk (MCPTT), MCData and mission-critical video (MCVideo); MCX clients; user equipment (UE) and cab radios; evolved multimedia broadcast/multicast service (eMBMS) components; IP multimedia subsystem (IMS)/session initiation protocol (SIP) cores; consoles and control rooms; and railways test equipment.

The purpose and scope of the FRMCS Plugtests event are to test independently and jointly all components of the mobile communication system for railways. Railway-related test cases are available in ETSI TS 103 564. Additional railway-oriented test cases will be developed specifically for this event. Interop demonstrations where different vendors will showcase interoperability by executing the plugtests test cases for observers will also take place.
