AT&T Reports More Than 2.2M FirstNet Connections, 16,000 Subscriber Agencies

AT&T said that the FirstNet network now has more than 2.2 million connections and more than 16,000 subscriber public-safety agencies and organizations.

The carrier also noted that it has built out more than 90 percent of the band 14 coverage required in its contract with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). In its annual report, the FirstNet Authority said that buildout was about 80 percent complete at the end of 2020. Overall, AT&T said, the network covers 2.71 million square miles, and 100,000 square miles of LTE coverage was added in 2020.

During a conference call on its financial results for the first quarter of 2021, AT&T executives only briefly mentioned the FirstNet buildout. AT&T CEO John Stankey highlighted the FirstNet buildout as a key factor in the carrier being able to build out other verticals.

AT&T’s first-quarter financial results report noted that the carrier expects reimbursements of about $1 billion for 2021 for meeting milestones in its contract. According to the reports, AT&T did not receive any FirstNet reimbursements during the first quarter of 2021.

For the first quarter of 2021, AT&T reported consolidated revenues of $43.9 billion, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.04 compared to $0.63 in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted EPS was $0.86 compared to $0.84 in the year ago quarter.

Cash from operations for the quarter was $9.9 billion, capital expenditure was $4 billion and free cash flow was $5.9 billion.

On the communications side, AT&T recorded 595,000 postpaid phone net adds; 823,000 postpaid net adds; and 207,000 prepaid phone net adds. Postpaid phone churn was 0.76%. Revenues for the mobility side of the business were 9.4% with service revenues up 0.6% and equipment revenues up 45.2%.

Operating income for the mobility division was $6 billion, which was up 3.7% percent year over year. Operating income margin was 31.5%.
