PSCR Releases Information on Economic Impact of R&D Investments

The National Institute of Science and Technology’s (NIST) Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) division released a fact sheet on how the economic impact its research and development (R&D) efforts have had.

“While the ultimate impact of these research mechanisms is the increased safety of first responders and their communities through improved communications technologies, PSCR was interested in better understanding how their R&D investments to date result in economic impacts that ripple outward to state economies,” the fact sheet said. “An independent analysis was conducted to demonstrate how PSCR’s research investments translate into broader impacts to the United States, including jobs, earnings, value added and total economic output. As of 2021, PSCR investment has resulted in economic output in 30 of the 50 states.”

PSCR implements numerous research mechanisms aimed at advancing near and long term R&D activities to support the development of the nationwide public-safety broadband network (NPSBN). These mechanisms include grant funding, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts, prize challenge competitions and internal research. Those efforts are divided among six research areas: user interface/user experience, public-safety analytics, location-based services, security, mission-critical voice and resilient systems.

The report said that $229.69 million in NIST investment has led to an economic impact of $513.82 million. Additionally, the report found that the investments added $433.66 million to U.S. state economies over the period it invested. The study also measured a $264.53 million change in household earnings in the U.S. economy generated by PSCR’s efforts. Finally, the report found that 4,335 jobs were generated by each $1 million change in U.S. economic activity due to PSCR’s R&D efforts.
