The European Union’s Justice and Home Affairs Council expressed its support for the BroadWay project and encouraged member states to be involved in initiatives related to the project.

The council stressed the “importance of secure operational and EU interoperable communication for law enforcement agencies and other security practitioners to be able to properly protect and respond in case of cross-border cooperation in the area of public spaces and major events,” and invited “member states to further support EU initiatives aimed at the improvement of existing systems and EU-wide interoperable communication systems for public security, notably the Horizon 2020 BroadWay project.”

BroadWay is a pre-commercial procurement (PCP) to provide a clear solution for operational mobility and enable critical communications across borders for public safety. The project members hope to develop a technical solution and have it close to the market by mid-2022.

The BroadWay project was initially formed of 11 member states acting as procurers. However, the project is looking to expand the scope of its implementation and bring additional member states on board. To that attend an additional seven EU member states and three associated countries attended a prototype demonstration from BroadWay suppliers Airbus, Leonardo and Frequentis.

National ministry representatives were then invited to join the work on sustainability and to define jointly the future of the BroadNet network. The project said that the efforts should focus on the governance features of BroadNet, which will realize the outcome of BroadWay as a live capability of operational mobility for European responders.
