AT&T Expands FirstNet Deployables Fleet

AT&T announced that it is expanding FirstNet’s dedicated fleet of deployable network assets. The FirstNet fleet now boasts more than 100 land-based and airborne portable cell sites.

The first new deployables are three communications vehicles (CV) stationed across the country to provide an extra level of communications support beyond the standard deployable asset for first responders when needed. The CVs can be used for emergency deployments or planned events such as training exercises.

The CVs provide connectivity via LTE and/or Wi-Fi similar to a satellite cell on light truck (SatCOLT) and provide air-conditioned command space for two first responder communications personnel with multiple monitors, a television, charging stations, and a large exterior screen and speaker for briefings. The vehicles are equipped with a generator that can run for multiple days before refueling.

The next addition to the fleet is four micro SatCOLTs that have been stationed around the western U.S. for the 2021 wildfire season. Similar to the Compact Rapid Deployables (CRD), which agencies can purchase, the micro SatCOLTs can easily be deployed by a single technician within a couple of minutes on site.

AT&T also added deployables in the five U.S. territories by collaborating with local network providers in each region. AT&T has dedicated assets in both Puerto Rico and the three Pacific territories and just added two new portable assets in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).

Finally, the carrier added 10 SatCOLTS to provide first responders similar capabilities and connectivity to a cell tower. The carrier’s fleet of SatCOLTs is housed in more than 50 locations nationwide and has a 14-hour delivery window following an emergency request.
