New Chips Allow Devices to Better Integrate LTE, LMR Technologies

Improved computer chips are making it easier to integrate LTE and LMR technologies into one device, said Dave George, president and chief technologist at Pryme Radio Products.

To take advantage of these new chips, Pryme is adapting its radio accessories products and building them on one new platform called PrymeMax. This new platform is aimed at simplifying the radio accessory ecosystem.

In the past, Pryme would need to produce a variety of similar accessories that cater to both different technologies and devices from different manufacturers. For example, the company needed products dedicated to JVCKENWOOD or L3Harris, but this could lead to confusion for consumers who would not always realize that specific accessories were not intended for the type of radio they had. The PrymeMax platform helps solve this by eliminating the need for accessories catered to a specific brand, George said.

George said that the wireless industry is seeing more and more devices that support both LTE wireless and LMR radio communications so it makes sense that the accessory market begins to evolve similarly.

With accessories built on the PrymeMax platform, users can take an accessory used with an LMR radio and also pair with a cellphone providing agencies and users with more flexibility, George said. For example, some agencies and organizations will not provide all users with a radio because of the cost and instead outfit those individuals with smartphones, creating the need for a flexible accessory.

This evolution in the accessory market is necessary, George said, as other wireless applications, such as data and video, become more and more critical and agencies continue to grow their use alongside traditional voice.

“Voice in the modern world is an app,” George said. “The value of these devices is driving the market. Voice is just another application among others.”
