ATIS Releases Report on Requirements for Non-Public 5G Networks

The Alliance on Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) released “Deployment and Operational Requirements of 5G Non-Public Networks,” a new report addressing the opportunities inherent in the addition of the non-public networks (NPNs) to 5G in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 16.

In the pre-5G era, 3GPP networks were developed primarily for public communication services by commercial service providers. 3GPP Release 16 expands 5G by adding support for non-public wireless networks intended for use in many private settings and vertical sectors. In this new report, ATIS examines the vertical sector capabilities applicable to NPNs that are hallmarks of worldwide mobile communication services. The report presents an analysis of the NPN use cases as well as an assessment of technical solutions based on 3GPP specifications.

For public commercial mobile networks, these solutions involve sizeable support services and activities to meet deployment and operational requirements. The report identifies possible requirements to include in operators’ and vendors’ solution road maps, as well as potential topics for future specification in 3GPP or other organizations.

“NPNs are an important new capability in 5G systems and offer opportunities for service providers and user communities to address valuable new use cases,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “This new report addresses important technical topics necessary to deploy NPNs and shows how operators and vendors can meet operational requirements using 3GPP-defined specifications. It is a major industry contribution toward enhancing the quality and interoperability of NPN deployments.”
