Iridium Satellite made a $7,000 donation to support the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International Silent Key Scholarship Fund.

"The Silent Key Scholarship Fund, which was established to honor deceased APCO International members, provides funding for training and educational opportunities for public-safety communications officials," said Richard Mirgon, APCO president. "It's an investment in the future of our industry."

The contribution is part of the Trade-Up to Iridium program, introduced last year to give first responders and other users an easy upgrade path for trading in nonfunctioning satellite phones for new Iridium handsets. Company officials pledged to make a donation for each returned phone to the APCO International scholarship fund.

At last year's APCO International convention, Iridium presented a check for $17,000. This year's contribution brings the total to $24,000.
