Thompson Asks Obama for DHS Interoperability Task Force (8/2/10)

Rep. Bennie Thompson, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, sent a letter to President Barack Obama asking that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) lead a new task force to address public-safety interoperability challenges.

The letter follows testimony last week at a House subcommittee on emergency communications, preparedness and response hearing from DHS Assistant Secretary for the Office of Cyber Security and Communications Greg Schaffer that such a task force was needed and technical issues need to be worked out before the FCC moves forward with D block auction plans.

“Regardless of how the D block is ultimately allocated, it will be important for the administration to develop a realistic plan for funding the construction and sustainment of a public-safety broadband network,” the letter said.
