Motorola Wins $56M Public-Safety LTE Award in Mississippi (7/28/11)

Motorola Solutions received a $56 million award to implement a 700 MHz Long Term Evolution (LTE) broadband system for the Mississippi Wireless Communication Commission. Mississippi was one of seven public-safety jurisdictions to win federal grant money to build broadband networks.

The state received $70 million total in Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) money last year. The award is the third public-safety LTE procurement awarded to Motorola out of four total awards. Raytheon received a contract from Adams County, Colo., earlier this month.

The award was announced in Motorola’s second-quarter financial results released Thursday and in a quarterly filing by the state of Mississippi with the FCC. Mississippi evaluated three proposals, including Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent and Cellular South, before making the award.

In the Mississippi Wireless Communications Commission (WCC) filing, the state said the Motorola award was made in June. Mississippi is building a statewide 700 MHz narrowband system called the Mississippi Wireless Information Network (MSWIN), and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) equipment will use the same sites as MSWIN. About 97 of the 144 MSWIN sites are complete, according to the filing.

The MSWIN backhaul network is entirely microwave. During the first quarter, a contractor conducted microwave path analyses on all of the MSWIN Phase 1 and Phase 2 tower sites and began work on the Phase 3 sites. The microwave equipment for Phase 2 sites has shipped from Alcatel-Lucent and installation began in July. Phase 1 and Phase 3 sites will be manufactured in the third and fourth quarters of 2011.

According to the state’s plan, LTE equipment deployment will begin in the third quarter.

Motorola Solutions spokesman Matthew Messinger said the Mississippi award is not a finalized contract. No further details from Motorola were available at press time.
