Seattle Releases RFI for Mission-Critical Voice, Broadband Network (12/12/11)

The city of Seattle is requesting information about possible public-private partnerships for provisioning wireless mission-critical voice and broadband data capabilities for public safety and general government use.

The city’s Radio Executive Policy Committee (REPC), a policy committee composed of executives from governments and public-safety agencies within King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, Wash., released the request for information (RFI).

“Because information collected through this RFI could apply to local governments nationwide, this effort is endorsed by the chief technology officer (CTO) in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the White House and supported by a wide group of other governments nationwide,” said a letter from Bill Schrier, Seattle’s CTO. “City of Seattle will share its analysis of responses with those other, interested jurisdictions that, like city of Seattle, have received FCC waivers authorizing use of 700 MHz public-safety broadband spectrum.”

Seattle was not one of the seven jurisdictions across the country that received federal grants for their public-safety broadband networks. Responses to the RFI are due Feb. 10. A conference for interested parties will be held in early January.

The RFI said the region would like one network for mission-critical voice and broadband data. “The region is trying to determine whether or not we really need to fund another round of separate LMR systems,” the RFI said. “The region is seeking alternatives to the traditional capital funding model for the provision of mission-critical voice and data services.”
