Motorola Executives Request Guidance on Narrowbanding Equipment (9/25/12)
Tuesday, September 25, 2012 | Comments

Executives from Motorola Solutions met with FCC officials Sept. 19 to discuss questions regarding the sales and repair of existing Part 90 LMR equipment for narrowband waiver recipients after the Jan. 1, 2013, narrowband deadline.

The main two issues discussed included guidance on sales of existing 25-kilohertz-capable VHF and UHF equipment to recipients of narrowband waivers after Dec. 31, 2012. The second issue is whether 25-kilohertz-capable equipment submitted for repair following the deadline could be returned to the owner with the 25-kilohertz operation still enabled, if the owner had obtained a waiver.

Motorola executives asked whether repairing an existing 25-kilohertz-capable device is equivalent to manufacturing such a device, which is not allowed under the mandate. The vendor requested a public notice with answers to the questions to ensure clear guidance to vendors from the FCC on these topics.
