Chertoff Highlights DHS Interoperability Plans (11/29)

Establishing interoperable communications in large U.S. cities is a major goal for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff. In a speech at the 2006 Grant & Training National Conference, Chertoff noted that the agency is determined to ensure that the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) cities have interoperable communications in effect by the end of 2007, and that all states have interoperable communications in effect by the end of 2008. DHS plans to issue interoperability scorecards for the UASI cities in December. Chertoff said the scorecards will help prioritize cities that need more money to reach interoperability goals.
