IJIS Institute announced the Project Green Light Detroit as the recipient of the 2017 IJIS Institute Innovation Award. The award celebrates the accomplishments of Detroit Police Department (DPD) along with industry partner Motorola Solutions.

The DPD partnered with eight gas stations initially, with expansions to more than 50 businesses, to install real-time camera connections with police headquarters as part of a crime-fighting partnership between local businesses, the city of Detroit and community groups called Project Green Light Detroit. Project Green Light is the first public-private-community partnership, blending a mix of real-time crime fighting and community policing aimed at improving neighborhood safety, promoting the revitalization and growth of local businesses, and strengthening DPD’s efforts to deter, identify and solve crime. Incidents of violent crime were cut in half among the first group of businesses to enter the program, the program’s website said.

Honorable mentions for the award are Fairfax County Broadband Interoperability Project with the Department of Information Technology, Fairfax County, Virginia, and the Panic Button Pilot Program in Snohomish County, Washington.

The institute also announced Doug Robinson as the recipient of the 2017 Robert P. Shumate National Public Safety and Justice Contributor to Excellence Award. Robinson is the executive director of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). Under his leadership, NASCIO has become a major voice in the effort to persuade the public sector to accept new and innovative approaches to information processing.
