Parkinson Named Acting CEO of FirstNet

Edward Parkinson was named acting CEO of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), following the resignation of Mike Poth at the end of September.

Parkinson, formerly FirstNet executive director of external affairs, joined FirstNet in 2013 after working on the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee for then Chairman Rep. Peter T. King. During his time with the committee, Parkinson drafted the initial bill that began the effort to create FirstNet. Parkinson was one of the first employees to join FirstNet and served in a variety of leadership positions within the organization.

“I look forward to working with Ed in his new role,” said National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information David Redl. “His understanding of the history of the FirstNet project and his leadership roles throughout its maturation make him uniquely qualified to lead the FirstNet organization into its operational phase.”

Last month Edward Horowitz was named chair of the FirstNet board of directors for a two-year term. “Mr. Parkinson is an excellent choice for acting CEO,” Horowitz said. “I have had the pleasure of getting to know and work with Ed in his role as executive director of external affairs during the last three years and look forward to working closely with him as CEO.”

Earlier this year, Parkinson called a Colorado Public Safety Broadband Governing Body (CPSBGB) filing on public-safety interoperability with the FCC “very unprofessional and years late.”

“Clearly trying to do the work of a vendor,” Parkinson said in an email to Simon Tafoya, senior director for policy and federal relations in the Colorado Office of the Governor.
