AT&T, Verizon Boost Networks, Support Public Safety for Super Bowl

Both AT&T and Verizon executives are touting their enhanced network coverage and public-safety support for the Feb. 3 Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta.

AT&T said it deployed the 700 MHz band 14 spectrum across the Atlanta area to provide optimal coverage and capacity for first responders. Distributed antenna systems (DAS) have been installed at numerous local and federal public-safety agency centers.

In addition, a First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) satellite cell on a light truck (SatCOLT) is staged outside the stadium for extra redundancy and to provide additional coverage to first responders if needed.

Members of the FirstNet team have staffed the command post for Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) homeland security during the week leading up to and through the day of the football game.

Verizon officials said the carrier has spent $97 million in infrastructure upgrades in the area including 350 miles of fiber, 300 small cells, 30 new sites and modifications to existing sites to add capacity.

Verizon engineers are also staffed at the GEMA command center, and executives said the carrier serves the majority of public-safety agencies in the state of Georgia. Verizon also added five mobile assets, including satellite units for backup, in strategic locations throughout the Atlanta area.

The company has its own command center at the event, monitoring network operations and system performance. The performance staff track capacity and usage, adjusting as necessary. The network assurance team monitors the entire network with field engineers dispersed throughout the area to address any problems that arise.
