Report Offers Cybersecurity Best Practices, Checklists for Public Safety

The Public Safety Technology Alliance (PSTA) released the cybersecurity technical subcommittee report, which includes the initial PSTA recommendations for public safety and industry. The report includes eight best practices and checklists for public-safety agencies based on their size.

The cybersecurity subcommittee was established to ensure security benchmarks for small, medium and large public-safety agencies are met. The intent of the report is to help agencies embrace cybersecurity while being practical in implementation. The report should serve as an agency reference of resources available to assist with the security of technology solutions for first responders and will allow industry to provide consistent guidance on best practices for implementation.

“We believe these recommendations and checklists will help public-safety agencies of all sizes implement security solutions by creating an environment that public safety can rely on to responsibly and efficiently maximize its use of technology,” said PSTA board member David Theel.

The subcommittee’s recommendations are based on input and ongoing discussion among PSTA industry and public-safety membership. The report was formulated leveraging industry and public-safety expertise, as well as publicly available open standards and related information.

Last month, PSTA CEO TJ Kennedy said the organization had 79 members, 57 from public safety and 22 from industry.

“It is so important for agencies to have clear guidance and resources for cybersecurity in order to enable the life-saving communications that their first responders need every day,” said PSTA Cybersecurity Subcommittee Chair Bob Escalle.

As PSTA considers additional, relevant information provided within the cybersecurity subcommittee, it will update and release any changes to its recommendations as necessary. The report is here, and a comment form is here.
