South Korea Selects Open Source Database for Public-Safety Networks
Monday, October 21, 2019 | Comments

The South Korea Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) selected the Altibase open source relational database to promote interoperability for its public-safety Long Term Evolution (LTE) network and other systems.

MOIS selected Altibase to meet several requirements. Until recently, agencies used to deploy various individual two-way wireless networks so communications between agencies could not be coordinated in the event of a disaster. MOIS wanted to extend a recovery network more effectively so that first responders could instantly access videos, photos, maps and other data. The government agency wanted the infrastructure to support narrowband-internet of things (NB-IoT), direct-to-direct (D2D) communications, evolved multimedia broadcast multicast service (eMBMS), isolated operation for public safety (IOPS) and mobile base stations for better management of emergency situations.

A deciding factor in MOIS' choice is that Altibase is a reliable database with 20 years of experience in dealing with telecom companies. Altibase also has in-memory capabilities that allow for uninterrupted and real-time service. The product provides replication so that uninterrupted quality service is guaranteed through its stand-by server when active servers fail to function. Altibase's replication function supports duplex configuration between remote database management system (DBMS) nodes, enabling real-time data synchronization between remote communications devices.

As a result, South Korea’s public-safety LTE network is secured and reliably maintained even in extreme environments such as rugged mountainous terrain, data explosions and loss of digital units/base stations. Effective communications services can be provided where data traffic is highly concentrated or reception is poor. MOIS is now equipped with real-time surveillance video, high-resolution photos, bidirectional vehicular video, and dynamic mapping and routing.
