German Group Asks Regulator to Extend 400 MHz Access Beyond 2025

German critical communications association PMeV urged the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) to grant long-term use of the 410 – 430 MHz frequency range for narrowband trunked radio. The association said voice communications in TETRA networks remains an urgent need.

The frequency spectrum allocation currently ends 31 December, 2025. To ensure planning and investment security, the PMeV Association considers it imperative to offer users of narrowband technologies the use of 410 – 430 MHz band beyond 2025.

"Safety- and mission-critical voice communications in this frequency range remains essential and indispensable both for critical infrastructure operators and the industry,” said Bernhard Klinger, chairman of the PMeV board of management. “Besides the renewal and expansion of existing networks, there are currently lots of new business enquiries for TETRA communications systems. There will be an investment backlog if users cannot plan beyond 2025.

"Delays in urgently needed investments by these users will finally result in deficits and inefficiencies regarding the supply and protection of the population.”

Irrespective of the increasing need for wideband services, secure and highly reliable voice communications in narrowband communication networks will remain a top priority, he said.

"In my opinion, this situation will not change in at least the next 10 years,” Klinger said.

The PMeV is a network of experts for mission- and safety-critical communications solutions in mobile professional applications.
