Senate Report Discusses Chinese Carrier Threats to U.S. Government

The U.S. Senate released a report titled “Threats to U.S. Networks: Oversight of Chinese Government-Owned Carriers” as a staff report from the permanent subcommittee on investigations.

This report details how the U.S. federal government, particularly the FCC and the departments of Justice and Homeland Security, historically exercised minimal oversight to safeguard U.S. telecommunications networks against risks posed by Chinese state-owned carriers.

The executive summary said the Chinese government views telecommunications as a strategic industry and has expended significant resources to create and promote new business opportunities for its state-owned carriers and has established barriers to market entry for foreign carriers seeking to operate in China.

Although the federal agencies have increased their oversight, a new committee’s authorities remain limited, and as a result, the United States, its privacy and information remain at risk.

The full report is here.
