Leonardo announced a partnership with Snam to develop innovation and safety products for the energy industry and a partnership with Tinexta to develop cybersecurity and digital trust products for industry.

Leonardo and Snam signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop their respective technological expertise to support innovation and sustainability in the energy industry. The partnership will specifically focus on digitalization, monitoring, physical and cybersecurity of processes, networks and infrastructures in order to increase their resilience and operational efficiency. The agreement is centered on developing the hydrogen economy, which will play a key role in achieving Europe’s decarbonization targets.

“The agreement falls within the scope of our technological and market development road maps identified in the Be Tomorrow - Leonardo 2030 strategic plan, set out on long-term sustainable growth, which also envisages the development of advanced systems to monitor and defend critical infrastructures, as well as the development of aerospace systems linked to the ecological transition,” said Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo.

The partnership between Leonardo and Snam will mainly focus on the cybersecurity of strategic infrastructures, internet of things (IoT) technologies and advanced sensors for monitoring energy networks and introducing hydrogen into the aerospace sector.

Large networks have recently experienced a rapid digital transformation of their physical assets. The Leonardo and Snam partnership will explore the possibilities offered by the most innovative technologies for increasing the operational efficiency and resilience of industrial plants. The areas of collaboration range from Industry 4.0, with applications for the digitalized management of infrastructures and industrial processes based on IT, operational technology (OT), IoT, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, big data, blockchain, advanced analytics and digital twin, to infrastructure security, using situational awareness solutions, mission-critical communication technologies and advanced sensors.

The three-year agreement envisages that the joint solutions may also be applied to other international players in the large energy networks sector. If necessary, the agreement will be subject to subsequent binding agreements defined by the parties in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework, including related parties transactions.

Additionally, Tinexta and Leonardo signed an MoU to collaborate on Industry 4.0 and data security projects for the Italy's manufacturing system.

The partnership between Leonardo and Tinexta aims to provide the market with effective and comprehensive responses to reduce the risk of cyberattacks in the context of the digital transformation of public and private organizations.

According to the latest report by the Italian Association for Information Security, in 2020 cyberattacks at a global level increased by 12% compared to the previous year. According to a report by Swascan, Italy ranks fifth, after the U.S., Canada, France and the U.K., among countries with published figures with regard to the number of companies falling victim to ransomware attacks.

The aim of the agreement between Leonardo and Tinexta is therefore to protect the Italian manufacturing sector from cyber threats, and in particular the sectors which, according to a report by Yoroi, have proved most vulnerable to attacks in the last year: manufacturing companies, financial services companies, the textile and fashion sector, and utilities.

The agreement provides for the pooling of the Tinexta Cyber Business Unit's solutions with the activities and expertise of Leonardo's center of excellence for cybersecurity and the Global Security Operation Centre in Chieti, Italy.

Furthermore, Leonardo and Tinexta will integrate their respective vertical technology components in the areas of IoT, OT, digital trust, distributed digital identity based on blockchain, digital onboarding and remote recognition, into complete solutions for the monitoring of critical national infrastructures. It will thus be possible to ensure the legal value of transactions in all processes involving the use of such technologies and entire processes may be enabled in a natively digital mode, guaranteed by InfoCert, a European trust service provider.

"Along with Leonardo, we share a strong focus on cybersecurity and digital trust, convinced that they represent strategic assets for the economic recovery and the development of the national economic system,” said Tinexta CEO. “In fact, being able to count on secure digital infrastructures is an essential prerequisite for competitiveness in business and at Tinexta Group we are committed to their creation and ongoing improvement, precisely through the integration of aspects of trust certification and information security. The memorandum that we are announcing today was therefore created with the intention of pooling the superior experience and most innovative solutions of two major Italian groups for the protection of millions of sensitive items of data and for the development and promotion of the concept of digital trust, which is essential for the legal validity of countless everyday digital transactions.”

The partnership will be directed by a joint steering committee, in which the top management of the two companies will participate. The committee will determine the strategic direction of programs and projects, and a management committee that will identify and manage individual initiatives.
